"The city of Des Moines said Friday that its plan to build the country's largest skate park has surpassed its $6.5 million fundraising goal.

Construction crews already starting moving dirt for the Lauridson Skate Park, which will sit along 2nd Avenue near Wells Fargo Arena.

A Polk County supervisor said a public-private partnership helped organizers surpass the fundraising goal.

Construction crews can now build a new spectator park with the skate park -- a project originally designed to happen much later.

"That growth has allowed us to not only have a world class skate park in Des Moines but we will have the largest skate park in the country with unique features found in no other skate park in the world," said Norm Sterzenbach, with Skate DSM."
